I remember in previous versions if you wanted to make a curved line with the polygon tool you just clicked and dragged and it would create a bezier curve. Now, even when I make a curved line in the 2D window it comes out as segmented with straight lines in the 3D window. Please help.

Your avatar is super tiny. Those lines cant be curved if there is no space for the different points that conform to the curve.
If you are going to use a custom avatar, first check the size or compare it to an avatar from MD. Remember that MD works in a real human scale. That's why too small avatars won't display right either in the 3D window or the 2D window. Same for over size avatars. I leave you a link below that will help you out importing your avatar.
