Do they need to be "sewn" in? I feel silly but none of the instructions I have found show them being sewn....

It depends, are you referring to the default asset ones that are used like avatars or Shoulder Pads made using our software and can be simulated?
"Shoulder Pads made using our software and can be simulated" - I added the shoulder pads from the hardware and trims section that came default with Marvelous Designer. Located here -> MarvelousDesigner > Assets > Materials > Hardware_and_Trims > Shoulder_Pads
oh they are Zpacs, my apologies. then ABSOLUTELY you have to sew them in. or at least use tack to attach them. I don't know what content you are referencing that is missing instructions because none of our official tutorials use them -- but all cloth items need to be attached with sewing, pins or tacks.
ok well I did not have a lot of luck getting them working because I was not clear where to sew them. (I can sew IRL but haven't made a jacket with shoulder pads). Is it to the sleeve or the sleeve top where the front and back panels join at the top?
These assets are ported over from our sister software CLO. I would recommend looking into where and how shoulder pads are usually attached to jackets in real life and using those methods or whichever works best for you and your 3D pipeline.
