Objective

Tips for creating stable and realistic garment animation for multi-layered garments.

Operation

Optimize 3D Garment for Animation

The heavier the garment, the slower and harder it records. Follow the steps below to make it lighter.

1. For a multi-layered garment, increase particle distance to 20mm for inner layers that are not as visible as outer layers.
2. Delete invisible and any other unnecessary layers.
3. Outer layers:
   →Set the particle distance to 10mm for parts that does not require higher level of expression of wrinkles.
   →Set the particle distance to 5mm for parts that require higher level of expression of wrinkles. If there is large quantity of layers set to 5mm, set all of them to 7mm.

Fix Garment

If garment is not fixed to avatar while recording the animation, the garment moves drastically around the avatar due to collision. Certain parts of the garment need to be fixed to the avatar or itself to create more realistic recording.
→Use functions such as 'Avatar Tape' or 'Tack on Avatar' to attach shoulder and sides of the garment.
→Use 'Tack' function for overlapped layers or any parts that may dangle.

Increase Transition Animation Time

Increase the transition animation time for heavier garments. In the animation dialogue, enter 5FPS to stabilize the simulation. This makes the avatar movement slower which helps to minimize the collision between the garments.

Set Simulation Quality status on 'Complete' for the First Recording

Setting Simulation Quality status on 'Complete' minimizes the collision between the avatar and garments. To save time, the simulation quality can be set to 'Normal' for the middle part of the recording as the avatar and garments tend to collide more in the beginning and end. Make sure the simulation to set the quality back on 'Complete' for the end of the Transition Animation.

Reevaluate Draping of the Garment after the Recording

As the avatar moves, some parts of the garment may collide. When the simulation is off, the 3D garment may appear fine, however there is possibility of unnoticeable collision which may destabilize rest of the recording.

→Return to Simulation Mode.

※ Note: From ver2.5.0, it is possible to simulate by pressing the Simulation button without recording it.

→Active simulation and make sure the entire garment simulation is stable.
→If any parts of the garment is unstable, readjust the layers by using the Select/Move tool.
→Once the simulation has been stabilized, go back to the Animation Mode.

Set Simulation Quality status on 'Complete' when Recording the Actual Garment Animation

Make sure to set Simulation Quality status on 'Complete' for final recordings of Garment Animation as the 'Complete' and the 'Normal' give clearly different results in expressing reality.
